Many of us get excited when we see a rainbow – an arc of colored light. When the sun shines in an area where it rains, you can see them best. Sometimes of impressive size and incomparable variety of colors. But why do rainbows form? Sunlight looks like it has no color, but in reality, it contains many colors that are refracted at different angles: blue light is refracted at the greatest angle, red light the smallest. Thus red appears on the outermost (widest) edge of the rainbow´s arc, and violet on the inside (narrowest edge).

I, too, have always been fascinated by rainbows, but I am now learning (again) the scientific explanation behind them, and it fascinates me, although I was given other labels as a child, as a student:

Not good in science

Good in art

Math not good

Language good

These labels didn’t help me to develop freely and without thinking, because it is in the nature of humans – as I could learn from many experts – to take these labels given by other people (family, teachers, friends) seriously and somehow make them their own truth.

Anyone who has seriously studied mathematics knows that there is no human who could not learn mathematics, it is in the nature of humans, so to speak. Whether one can then gain something from individual areas such as probability calculation is something else.

When we communicate, we often unconsciously assign labels to others and thus convey our own truths: “That dress doesn’t suit you,” “working with wood isn’t for you,” “he doesn’t know how to cook”. But these labels are not inscriptions, comparable to the list of ingredients in a cereal box. They are personalized, not objective. And they are not helpful, even harmful.

If you mark someone with a label, you blind yourself to the infinite other qualities, strengths and possibilities that someone can have; if you get such labels, the same thing happens in you.

The occupation with a rainbow made the following clear to me: Some labels of my childhood stick to me and cause me to limit myself and make me unfree, and the rainbow contains an infinite number of colors – even if we often only see the main colors.

Just a thought…
